A large portion of yachts cruising Fiji each year begin their cruises in Savusavu, and end them in Nadi Waters (the large bay off Nadi which includes both Denarau and Vuda Point Marinas). Broadly speaking, there are three routes between these two places.

The first two are the most commonly taken, while few take the third. I have sailed all three. Below I describe features of all, and would argue that more people should try the third, the “one less traveled”. I am an old- school sailor who navigates his own paths. These notes do not consider using shared GPS waypoints or tracks. In Fiji one should not expect to obtain stores, fuel or water, outside of the major ports or towns.

On Savusavu’s doorstep lies what are arguably Fiji’s best cruising areas: both the Lau Group, and the Koro Sea beckon. Before moving west, a couple of weeks here is almost obligatory, while a couple of months may become the highlight of the visit to Fiji. Some sailors return to Savusavu after cruising the Lau, while others will exit the Lau towards the west, sailing onwards south of Viti Levu. Alternatively, sailing through some of the Koro Sea is inevitable after leaving Savusavu towards the south coast of Viti Levu, and several stops can be planned.

Sailing around the south coast of Viti Levu makes for easy navigation, with deep seas and generally with reliable, fair winds. Close to your route is Suva, Fiji’s capital, and a most interesting city. The Royal Suva Yacht Club makes a great base for a few days here. Kadavu, 60 miles to the south of Suva is another great cruising ground well worth at least two weeks’ visit.

Crossing Fiji by this route takes a minimum of 3 – 4 days.

The east and north coasts of Viti Levu are guarded by an almost continuous array of barrier and offshore reefs. Several clear passages through these reefs allow access to a well-used route around the coast. Mostly only 1 – 2 miles offshore and less than a mile wide, this route was once (in British times) well-marked with scores of beacons. My BA charts show >50 beacons here, though many of these are now lost to time, or cyclones (a recent estimate suggested 50% are lost). They cannot be relied on. With frequent reefs, and many course changes, this route requires careful and continuous piloting. Due to runoff from the land the shallow water is often unclear, so spotting reefs in less- than-ideal light can be challenging. However, safe anchorage can be found almost anywhere along the route, so when it becomes unsafe to continue, just stop for the night. The coast is fringed with mangroves and is not remarkable for scenery.

Many sailors heading west enter the route through Nananu Passage, which leads to Nananu-i-Ra Island, off the major town of Rakiraki on the NE corner of Viti Levu. The island, promoted for kite-surfing, offers excellent anchorages, as well as a very hospitable resort ashore. With about 50 miles coasting to Lautoka, and given the care required, most will need 2 days to sail on to the more open Nadi Waters.

Crossing Fiji by this route takes a minimum of 3 – 4 days. For longer trips, stores will be available from the coastal towns, though – apart from Lautoka – these are not convenient to access from a boat.

Sailing from Savusavu along the south coast of Vanua Levu is easy and interesting. Winds tend to be fair, and skies clear. Few supplies (including fuel and water) will be available until arrival in Nadi Waters, which could be a month away at cruising speeds.

There are several excellent anchorages on the coast of Vanua Levu, west of Savusavu. The best of these is superb Nasonisoni Harbour, both an ideal cruising stop and a hurricane hole if one is needed. Near the western end of Vanua Levu is an adequate anchorage off the ferry port, Nabouwalu. Some basic stores might be available here, but I was unable to find a safe place to leave the dinghy. Five miles north of here is a conveyor-loading facility for large bulk carriers exporting wood chips to Asia. About five miles further north is excellent shelter in the mangrove-girt Bua Bay, a remote and empty world. Several villages hide behind the mangroves.

Twenty miles west of Bua Bay is the delightful island of Yadua. At the western end is an excellent anchorage, large enough for perhaps ten boats. This bay is named Strahan Harbour on BA charts, and Thukova (Cukova) Bay in Fijian. There is a clear passage through reefs across the entrance to the bay, though entry must be made in good light. Yadua is perhaps best known for the iguana reserve on the tiny, adjacent island of Yadua Taba (landing prohibited).

Another good anchorage is in Vakasa Bay on the north coast, just west of the Watering Bay shown on charts. An intensive Korean-funded operation based here has up to 40 divers, on 6 boats, scouring the sea of sea slugs. Watering Bay is a poor anchorage, and its water would not suit modern sailors.

To visit the Yadua’s only village, Denimanu, which is on the exposed eastern coast, it may be best to leave the yacht at anchor in Vakasa Bay. There is a 20-minute walk on the track over the ridge. First reached is a group of 18 new houses, built to replace houses wrecked in 2012 by Hurricane Evan. Walk on 300m to the old village where sevusevu can be given to Chief (Ratu) Johnny.

Sailing from Yadua through Bligh Water to Yasawa Island, at the north end of that chain, takes a little planning. There are reefs for about 5 miles when departing Yadua, and for about 10 miles on the approach to Yasawa Island, at the north of the Yasawa islands. Negotiating these requires either a GPS track that you can trust, or good light. There is about 40 miles of open water passage between these areas, so a very early departure is required.

It seems best to depart Yadua at dawn, using a GPS track recorded when arriving there. I did so, and arrived off the area of reefs approaching Yasawa Island at about 1300 hours, when the dangers there were clearly visible. The obvious anchorage to head for is at Sawa-i-Lau, and the great, dark limestone mountain of that name is clearly visible from 10 – 15 miles off.

Sailors here need to be aware that they may meet strong winds in the northern Yasawas; and that the reefs may be hard to spot if the light is poor. My Plan B was to head north through Round Island Passage, to heave-to in open water, and then return the next morning. Others may trust GPS tracks given to them. It pays to be prepared for difficulties here.

From Yasawa Island to Nadi Waters will take at least a few days – or a few weeks, depending on food supplies aboard, and your plans. It is a wonderful cruising area, and arriving in the north of the chain is a wonderful place to begin cruising the Yasawas.

Captain Bligh of Bligh Water

When worrying about navigating this area it pays to remember Captain Bligh and his passage through here in 1789. He had been kicked off his ship “HMS Bounty” near Tofua, Tonga, with 18 of his men. They were cast adrift in a 23’ open boat with “150 lb bread, 16 pieces of pork each weighing 2 lb., 6 quarts of rum, 6 bottles of wine, with 28 gallons of water, and four empty barricoes.” This was enough food and water for perhaps a week. They also had some sail-repair materials, the carpenter’s tool chest, four cutlasses, a quadrant and a compass.

With this dreadfully overloaded open boat (freeboard was “a hand’s length”), and without charts or weapons, Bligh was able to safely make the 47-day voyage from Tonga to Kupang, Indonesia – 3618 nautical miles. Kupang was the nearest European settlement at the time, and the closest place he could expect to receive help in. The only casualty of this voyage was one man killed before the voyage began at Tofua, where Bligh had tried to find further food and water for his voyage.

Bligh and his men sailed through Fiji – Lau, Koro and what is now known as Bligh Water – well aware that they would most likely be eaten if they were caught by the locals. Ever the consummate navigator, Bligh kept notes and sketched maps of his discoveries along the way.

Many of the islands we see when sailing this area were first charted by this remarkable sailor. Continuing on through Australia’s Barrier Reef to a landfall on Cape York (Bligh had been here before with Captain Cook in 1770), Bligh and his then passed through Torres Strait and on to Kupang.

It is well worth downloading Bligh’s “DANGEROUS VOYAGE – 1789”, free from google to your iPad, before sailing this passage.

Destination: Pacific Harbour

Flanked by lush, jungle-clad hills on one side, and a fringing reef that dramatically drops into the deep blue of the Beqa Channel on the other, Pacific Harbour is home to some of Fiji’s most sought-after experiences – you know, the ones you cannot wait to call home to brag about!

Pacific Harbour is already well known as the ‘Adventure Capital of Fiji’. A little farther up into the river mouth from the Pearl Resort Marina Development, Club Oceanus serves as a small boat marina with limited space for long term berthing. It is a popular location as a transit point. There is generally no charge for boats to tie up alongside for loading/unloading – the well stocked bar and delicious menu may even entice you to take a seat and relax for a meal. You will also find Wi-Fi and water available. Just off the main Queens Highway, delivery vehicles can enter via the resorts service access and reverse close to the dock. Savusavu is an official port of entry into Fiji. This yacht focused town nestled along the coastline of Southern Vanua Levu, is home to not one, but two marinas.

The town is usually the first port of call for people sailing from Tonga and Samoa.

Because Savusavu town provides most things a cruising yacht needs, from fuel, water and groceries, to banking, general hardware and electrical, Savusavu’s harbor is bustling with yachts coming and going.

Many use Savusavu as a base for cruising the less explored Northern islands of Fiji and quite often set up camp in the protected Nakama Creek for the duration of our cyclone season.

The town is famous for its hot springs (just ask a local to point them out), and at low tide you can see the steam from numerous small outlets all along the foreshore. It is not uncommon to find pots of food being cooked over the bubbling waters, so if you happen run out of gas onboard, you know where you can boil your eggs!

As an interesting side note – this geothermal energy is resource that could generate enough electricity to power the entire island of Vanua Levu!

Both the Copra Shed Marina and Waitui Marina welcome overseas yachts and provide moorings, and a gathering place for the yachtsmen.

Once you have arrived in Savusavu, moored up and gotten yourself settled into the swing of things, be sure to take a look at the local Savusavu website maintained by the Savusavu Tourism Association.

International Dateline

In the 19th century, needing to establish an International Dateline to distinguish one day from another for navigators, a line was drawn right through the middle of Taveuni and the island was forevermore divided geographically into two days.

On a road near Waiyevo village is a sign, which marks the location of the 180th meridian of longitude. Another marker, more precisely placed, can be found beyond the end of the Waiyevo village football field overlooking the sea. Here you can have your photo taken and have a little fun with time travel!

Lake Tagimoucia

At the centre of the island, in a volcanic crater, you will find Lake Tagimoucia. Reaching the lake (which is at some 800 meters altitude) takes a serious hike of some three or four hours, depending on the condition of both the track, and of course, you.

The National Flower – Tagimoucia

The beautiful Tagimoucia flower (Medinilla waterhousei) only grows in the volcanic cold region high up in the mountains of Taveuni, thriving around Lake Tagimoucia. The rare red and white wild flower blooms between the months of October and February and cannot be found anywhere else in the world!

One of the many legends passed down through the ages, tells the story of a princess in love, who was being forced by her father to marry another man from the village. She ran away, high up into the mountains above the village and fell asleep in the comfort of a tree that hid her and shared in her pain. The tear shaped flowers we see today, are a reminder of the princesses true love

If you are in the mood for a completely ‘natural’ high – in all senses of the word, then take a trip to the Waitavala waterslide.

A naturally polished rock streambed chute plummets for about 50 meters through the stunning rainforest, and offers an afternoon of sheer delight!

Only a short walk from Waiyevo town, the local kids will love showing you how it’s done – some of the better practiced can even do it standing up!

Do check with the locals after heavy rains, as it can be a little rapid and muddy.

Wairiki Catholic Mission, Taveuni

Wairiki Mission Church

When sailing past the main wharf, you will notice a large white cross standing on the hill overlooking a large stone church with impressive stained glass windows.

History tells us that a famous 19th-century naval battle occurred here when Taveuni warriors turned back a large Tongan invasion force. One account reports that a Marist priest provided the Fijians with a fighting strategy that helped them win – their weapon: a small cross.

The defeated Tongans ended up as Fijian barbeque and the French priest who was then pronounced the Fijian chief’s advisor was given land and laborers to assist in building his mission. Many converted to Catholicism after the battle believing the cross to have been their savior, and the giant cross watching over the battleground serves as a reminder of this.

The church is an impressive building set against a dramatic backdrop and catching a Sunday service regardless of your faith or lack thereof, is well worth it if only to listen to the beautiful unaccompanied singing by the choir.

Birdwatchers Paradise

Taveuni is noteworthy for the diversity of flora and fauna, particularly the island’s bird life.

Bird watchers consider Taveuni among the best of the big islands. You’ll see the green-blue Taveuni Parrot all over the island, or at least hear its distinctive squawk.

Big pigeons and parrots are easy to spot, but the ones avid bird-watchers come for are the Azure Crowned Flycatcher, and perhaps the most famous of all the birds found on the island, the fabled Orange Dove.

The Rainbow Reef

Diving around Taveuni is a real pleasure, famed for breathtaking soft coral reefs. The strong currents that rip through the narrow Somosomo Strait create ‘The Rainbow Reef’. Vuna Reef offers the opportunity to see larger pelagic and schooling species and a mixture of pristine hard and soft corals.

Bouma National Heritage Park

The Bouma National Heritage Park, on the eastern side of the island, was established in 1990, as the original ‘eco-tourism’ venture of Fiji.

Protecting the lush rainforests, coastal area and fringing coral reef also created a means to generate income for the four villages whose land is bounded by the park.

Within the National Heritage Park, each of the four villages has established eco-tourism projects:

Waitabu Marine Park & Campground

The Waitabu Marine Park was established in 1998 after an agreement between over 7 Fijian communities was made, not to fish or anchor in the 1km of selected fringing reef. Aside from the small tourism business this Marine Protected Area (MPA) has provided for the village of Waitabu, it has also provided a first hand example of the power of conservation, generating larger fish catches and increased biodiversity in the surrounding waters. The Tavoro Waterfall trip is a beautiful 3 hour return hike: 3 trails of increasing difficulty taking you up into the hills above the village of Korovou and past the awe inspiring waterfalls of the Tavoro River. The trail starts out with a 10-minute walk to the first and most famous waterfall of Fiji, and then continues up a series of switchbacks past gorgeous panoramic views to the second & third falls.

Lavena Coastal Walk, Kayaking & Lodge

This beautiful town is protected by the bay which leads into Namaka Creek – a popular anchorage for yachts from around the world. A wander along Main Street will see you welcomed by many smiling faces and Fiji’s enthusiastic greeting of ‘Bula!’. Small enough to feel like a local, but large enough to keep to yourself if that’s how you roll.

Waisali Rainforest Reserve

Located just outside of Savusavu town, the Waisali Rainforest Reserve is a declared protected area and biodiversity conservation project owned by the Waisali community in partnership with the National Trust of Fiji.

The very high diversity and high incidence of endemic species makes Waisali one of the few managed parks in Fiji with a unique and important floral and faunal composition. The reserve is approximately 130 hectares and is one of the last unexploited rainforest in Vanua Levu. Birds found in the reserve include the rare Orange Dove, the Red Shining Parrot, the Collared Lory and the Orange Breasted Myzomela among others.

The reserve is home to the endangered Fiji Ground Frog (Platymantis vitenus) and the endemic Fiji Tree Frog (Platymantis vitiensis). The ground frog population in Waisali is the only known population of the species on mainland Fiji.

Things to See and Do in Suva

Transport

There are excellent bus services within and around the city, and a continuous bus service 7 days a week between Nadi and Suva that continues around the island via Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki (although this service is less frequent on Sundays). Taxis can be hailed simply by raising your eyebrows and are relatively cheap.

The Fiji Museum

Located within the beautiful Thurston Gardens, the Fiji Museum is the oldest museum in the South Pacific. From photographs to a full size war canoe, the museum is brimming with archaeological findings dating back 3500 years, as well as cultural objects reflecting Fiji’s inhabitants during the past 100 years, this is an absolute must see attraction!

Thurston (Botanical) Gardens

Located in Suva between Albert Park and the Government House, Thurston Gardens are built on the site of the original town of Suva the former inhabitants of which moved across the bay in about 1882.

The gardens were renamed from the Suva Botanical Gardens to Thurston Gardens in honour of the fifth governor of Fiji, Sir John Bates Thurston who initiated the idea for a Botanical Garden in Suva.

A stroll through the avenues of Royal Palms and tree ferns to admire the many varieties of palms, gingers, water lilies and other local flora is a wonderful way to spend an hour or two.

Or perhaps a lunchtime picnic by the ornamental clock tower in an oasis of peace.

Much of the vegetation is labeled, so even if you are not a botanist, you can still get a fair idea of what you are looking at!

The Grand Pacific Hotel

The Grand Pacific Hotel is located on the main sea front, on Victoria Parade. It was built by The Union Steamship Company in 1914 to serve the needs of passengers on its transpacific routes.

The design of the hotel was to make the passengers think they had never gone ashore with rooms decked out like first-class staterooms, complete with saltwater bathrooms and plumbing fixtures identical to those on an ocean liner!

All rooms were on the second floor, and guests could step outside to a wide veranda overlooking the harbor and walk completely around the building – as if walking on the deck of the ship. Today, a much needed facelift is being given to the old girl, and therefore a wander around this beautiful building is not possible.

You can however walk past and give her a knowing nod as you imagine the wealthy passengers of ships similar to that of the Titanic, wandering around on the veranda, tricked into thinking they were still at sea!

The present mansion was built in 1928 to replace the original building, which was the residence of the colonial governor that burnt to the ground after being struck by lightning in 1921.

The building is closed to the public, but a highlight of a tourists visit to Suva is the changing of the guard ceremony during the first week of each month.

Charles Kingsford Smith was the first aviator to cross the Pacific, flying in his little Fokker F.VII/3m monoplane ‘The Southern Cross’ from California to his homeland of Australia.

Home to students from all over the world, the main campus of the regional university is based in Suva.

USP is the only university in the Oceania region to be internationally recognized outside of Australia and New Zealand and is ownedby the governments of 12 Pacific Island countries: the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue,Zealand and Vanuatu.

You can also visit the Oceania Centre for Arts Albert Park was also the site of the first hoisting of & Culture where you can see temporary exhibits the new national flag of Fiji on 9 October 1970 when of paintings and carvings and sometimes even Fiji attained her independence from the United watch an artist at work.

If you like hiking trails, swimming, and birdwatching, this is the place for you. Spend a day walking around the sub tropical rainforest of Colo-i-Suva, there are a number of clearly marked tracks to chose from that lead to a series of beautiful waterfalls that you can swim in.

Across the road from the main entrance, you will find the ‘Raintree Lodge Eco-Tourist Resort’ where you can sit and relax after your adventures with a coffee, juice, or if you are hungry, something from their delicious menu! A nominal entry fee of FJ$5 is payable to the park ranger located opposite the park entrance.

Although situated under a car park, and so not exactly inviting to the eye, this market will be attractive to your purse! Brimming with authentic local treasures, shipped in to be sold from the outer islands where traditional crafts are an essential part of the culture.

Traditional crafts still practiced today produce such items as hand carved wooden kava bowls (tanoa), or traditional war club replicas, hand painted masi, woven baskets; the list is endless and old is of course mixed with new.

You will have heaps of fun bargaining with the vendors, while helping Fiji’s economy by supporting our local artisans.

Note: A good time to visit the market is on Friday and Saturday mornings, however, some people swear by trips to the market late afternoon for real bargains because that’s when vendors simply want to clear their shelves and close up for the day.

Nadi offers a wide range of places to eat and drink to suit your taste and budget.

Transport

Bus services operate between Nadi and Suva every day and continue around the island via Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki (although this service is less frequent on Sundays). Taxi’s are numerous and relatively cheap.

Sightseeing

Sawa-i-Lau Caves

Located on Sawa-i-Lau island, in the northern Yasawa Islands, you will find one of the areas most popular natural attractions made famous by Brooke Shields innocent character in the movie Blue Lagoon.

Sawailau Lagoon

While Ulutini – a ten headed god is said to reside here, you will only find a mystical set of caves that are warm, safe and friendly to swimmers, snorkelers and divers alike. The first cave is lit by sunlight from an overhead hole. in the cave.

At high water, you can dive down just a few yards into the second series of 2-3 caves. You can take a guided trip to the caves, or given that you have your own vessel from which to explore, anchoring in the bay is straight forward enough with good holding ground that can accommodate larger yachts.

Weather wise the anchorage will be tenable in winds from ESE thru to WSW but you can move around in this area to find alternative anchorages.

Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

This unique Hindu temple, the largest in the southern hemisphere, reflects an architectural style rarely seen outside of India. The temple houses sacred statues designed by craftspeople brought over specifically from India.

Situated at the far end of Nadi town, the colours and statues around the temple are exquisite. While no tour is available, you can pick up a printed pamphlet detailing the meanings of the paintings, scriptures, and scenes.

Just don’t forget to cover your shoulders and take your shoes off before you enter!

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Meander through 20 hectares of incredible beauty and experience the serenity of one of the world’s largest orchid collections. Sitting at the foothills of the Nausori Highlands, the gardens were started in 1977 by the late actor Raymond Burr, of ‘Perry Mason’ and ‘Ironside’ fame.

Take a peaceful walk through the garden that is home to a beautiful array of native flowers, plants and lily ponds. At the end of the walk you will come to a quaint seating area where you can relax and reflect on the spectacular scenery.

You may also choose to take a look around Burrs old home, where the nominal entry fee also includes a delicious afternoon tea. Don’t forget your camera!

Momi Gun Battery

Momi Guns

Nestled among the sugar cane fields of Momi lies a now silent gun battery. In 1941, with World War II raging throughout the Pacific, Fiji was vulnerable to Japanese attack, and if captured, would be the perfect staging area for incursions into New Zealand and Australia.

Momi was selected as a battery site because it overlooked the Navula Passage, which offered one of the few breaks in the surrounding reef and was the spot where enemy ships could enter to attack Nadi town and the adjoining airfield. Eight cement structures that housed a command post, a fire control room, a rest room, two ammunition storerooms, two gun emplacements, and a range finder were built.

In the two gun emplacements, the battalion installed two six-inch guns and mounted them facing the sea. Today the Momi Battery is in the care of the National Trust of Fiji. It represents a proud period in Fiji’s history when so many of its citizens joined the war effort; many sacrificed their lives to keep Fiji safe and free.

It is a monument to the memory of these men and women.

Tandem Skydiving is the safest, easiest and most enjoyable way to do your first skydive. Almost anyone can skydive – even Paris Hilton has jumped with these guys! You can choose to jump from 8,000 feet, go ‘radical’ to 10,000, ‘extreme’ at 12,000, or else become a legend’ on your very first jump at 14,000 feet! Whichever height you jump from, we are sure that you will LOVE every breathtaking second.

If you feel like getting those sea legs spinning after a long passage, head to Stoney Creek Resort and hire a mountain bike from the guys at Wacking Stick Adventure Tours.

You can chose to be sent off with a map to explore the cane fields and foothills of the Sabeto Mountains at your own pace, or sign up for a guided tour. Half-day to five-day tours are available including all meals and accommodation.

A great way to see inland Fiji and exercise at the same time!

Paintball Fiji

Take a short 25-minute drive from Nadi, followed by a free boat ride across 300 meters of ocean, and you will find Fiji’s first and only Paintball field!

The battleground has been constructed with bunkers, pits, safety zones and a viewing area allowing you to run around carrying the latest equipment and safety gear imported from Australian specialists.

Go along for an action packed adventure with a bunch of friends (min 4, max 25) and watch the competitive streak come out in them all as you compete in teams to be the first to capture the opponent’s flag. Game availability is subject to weather. Minimum age is 16 years.
